Sedalia began as a train town when George R. Smith saw the potential as the railroad was crossing the state, and when the Missouri Pacific and Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT or “Katy”) Railroads decided to house machine shops in Sedalia, they created the thriving downtown that attracted Scott Joplin and other musicians to the city.
This tune, written in the classical ragtime tradition, evokes not the trains themselves but the hopes and dreams of the people whom the trains attracted to the city that today is the heart and soul of the modern ragtime scene. |
